GARDINER, William Reginald

William Reginald Gardiner (sometimes Gardener) was born in 1900 in Bath, Somerset to William Charles Gardiner and Kate Norton. He was the third of their surviving six children, one having died in infancy. William Charles was a Labourer in the engineering business. The family lived at Eldon Place and Oak Street before moving to 3 Morley Terrace, Sladebrook where they were still living at the time of the 1939 Register.

William Reginald Gardiner enlisted at Taunton in the Scottish Horse Yeomanry. In October 1918 he was with the 2/1st Regiment which had moved to Ireland in April 1918. Presumably returning home on leave he travelled on RMS Leinster on the 10th of October along with fifteen others from his regiment. Eleven of them did not survive the sinking, including William Gardiner, nor was his body recovered.

His name is recorded on the Hollybrook Memorial in Southampton and on Bath War Memorial.
